Handyman Business – Starting A Handyman Business

A handyman, also referred to as a handyman, plumber, repairman or handyperson, is someone skilled in a wide assortment of handy repairs, usually around the house. These jobs are not only do-it-yourself projects, but are also often described as “handy job” or “side job” work. These individuals may be self-employed or they may work for a company as an employee. A handyman may be the owner of his own business, which employs him to do small tasks that are necessary around the house, such as plumbing or electrical repairs.

The typical handyman will have some degree of education, although he will not be able to get a degree on plumbing or electric wiring unless he is licensed as a general contractor. Most states require that handymen are licensed, but some only require that they have an associate’s degree in plumbing or electrical work and have taken an approved contractor’s course. The most common types of courses taken by handymen include carpentering, architecture, carpentry, electronics installation, heating and plumbing, and HVAC (heating, venting, and air conditioning). Many handyman businesses employ individuals who have completed an approved training program.

Some states also require that licensed contractors to provide proof of financial responsibility, as well as proof that they are able to perform the services that have been contracted for. In order to legally obtain a handyman license in a state, the individual will have to pass a written examination, which typically consists of two to four hours of study provided by a vocational institute or an approved college. Once you have passed the examination, you will have to successfully complete a state approved training program. Some of the courses that are offered include home improvement, contracting, plumbing, electrical work and HVAC. In order to maintain your license, handyman companies must adhere to all of the state’s licensing laws and regulations.
